In which I take all the best news, quotes, pictures and everything else Saints-related toss it together and serve it up for our readers. This week we’ll be tackling the Saints (4–4) week 10 matchup against the Falcons in the Georgia (not to be confused with “Super”) Dome in Atlanta. It’s a fight to go from dead last in the division to tied for last in division with a win. So strap in, hit the jump and get ready for some football talk.

hollis thomas spongebob

In case you haven’t heard, Hollis Thomas is fashionable. That’s him up there wearing custom-made Spongebob Squarepants  pajamas and sleeping cap. And yes, that is a jewel-encrusted Patrick hanging from his neck. Apparently he has all the characters in jewelry (we’ve noted before that Thomas has a slight obsession with Spongebob).

-

What fans may not know, however, is that Thomas is also one of the most vocal players in the Saints locker room and one of the funnest players to interview. He’s also a bit of a smart ass who thinks he knows how sports reporters should dress.

CP3 Obama

If you know anything about this Hornets team it really shouldn’t take you long to guess who went ahead and wrote “OBAMA!!!” on the side of their shoe. But in case you’re stumped, I’ll give you a second and the answer is after the jump.

 CP3 hurting

“We got our butts kicked,” Coach Byron Scott said. “We didn’t come ready to play.”

 -

And, with that, goes the perfect season (ha!). Sometimes it takes losses like last night’s to put things into perspective. It was just the fourth game in the season, but Atlanta, in Scott’s words, “played with more energy, they were more physical than us” and “they were just manhandleing us.”

Will Smith

Sports and politics rarely mix on a relevant level. Fans nowadays don’t really look to athletes for political advice or opinions and there aren’t iconic stars like a Muhammed Ali or John Carlos and Tommy Smith to lead the way in terms of political activism.

-

So when Will Smith appeared in the Saints locker room today wearing an Barack Obama shirt, you could say I was a little bit surprised.

Ely hair

-

Among the things you learn in this city is to never have friends from out of town if you also want to get anything done. Apparently, I’m a slow learner.

-

Oh well – by now it would be silly to start analyzing the Hornets 3–0 start and that incredible opening night game at the Hive. So instead I’m going to be talking about hair.

Drew eveading

We’ve made many claims in this space (not the least of which being Drew Brees is a god amongst men) but we decided to look at a true outsider’s perspective. And what better place to look than FootballOutsiders.com?

-

For the uninitiated, the folks at Football Outsiders are the same that write Pro Football Prospectus. It’s the essential and definitive guide to all things NFL (these people have calculated their statistics for Chrissakes). But aside from coming up with their own statistical categories after dozens and dozens of hours of looking at game footage and analyzing statistics, they’ve revolutionized how we look at the NFL today.

-

Seeing as how Saints fans would like some context on this helter skelter season, I conduceted a Q&A with Bill Barnwell, managing editor of Football Outsiders, to give a sober, calculated look at the Saints thus far. This is what transpired:

Anonymous kicker

Despite not having found any evidence to support this on the internet, I’m thoroughly convinced that their’s some sort of direct correlation between the number of kickers a team cuts and its number of losses. As of right now, the Saints have cut not one, not two, but four kickers to date. The Saints record in that same span? 4–4.

It’s been 23 days since the last Scuttlecast and I have no idea where the time went. All of a sudden the Hornets season is about to be underway and I’m talking to Niall Doherty of the impeccable Hornets247.com (all Hornets fans should go ahead and bookmark that site right now). Music again provided by Sick Like Sinatra.

-

Oh, and Niall asked me to mention that he’s hosting a season launch party tonight at Handsome Willy’s starting at 7 p.m. There will be beer, Hornets on T.V. and giveaways - I highly recommend everyone goes (what else do you have to do on a Wednesday night anyway?).

Tyson Chandler is tall

Tyson Chandler has a blog.

-

It’s nothing groundbreaking (like he’s not calling people out or talking about hibachi grills like the Wizards’ Gilbert Arenas does in his blog) but it’s still a good form of entertainment with the Saints taking a break — though I’m sure the fireworks will return as soon as the Saints lose to the bye.
