larry and apple lane signs

-

The Amazing Signmakers are back this season. Larry and Apple Lane are back with season tickets, in the same seats, with many of the same signs plus a few new ones for the new season. I met with the Lanes briefly before last night game and they were nice enough to show me their new signs.

D-West tattoos

-

There was some speculation about David West’s new tattoos after Hornets media day. But what caught my eye recently was the two new ones he’s sporting on the back of his calves that read “Carpe” and “Diem”. For you non-Latin majors out there, the words mean “seize the day” and they’re much more than just a arbitrary mantra West has for himself.

CP3 dribbling

(UPDATE: Video of the dunk is now at the bottom of this post. Note at the end, where the video loops three times, in the top-right corner of the screen you can see Chris Paul waving his arms to get them to in bound the ball).

While all the talk after last night’s Hornets 100–89 win at the Hive was about Chris Paul’s record-setting performance (he became the first player in NBA history to start the season with six-straight games with 20 points and 10 assists, breaking Oscar Robertson’s record set in the ‘68-’69 season) all the Hornets players could talk about in the locker room was Dwyane Wade’s play.

-

Specifically, that monster dunk he had in the third quarter.

CP3 Obama

If you know anything about this Hornets team it really shouldn’t take you long to guess who went ahead and wrote “OBAMA!!!” on the side of their shoe. But in case you’re stumped, I’ll give you a second and the answer is after the jump.

 CP3 hurting

 -

“We got our butts kicked,” Coach Byron Scott said. “We didn’t come ready to play.”

 -

And, with that, goes the perfect season (ha!). Sometimes it takes losses like last night’s to put things into perspective. It was just the fourth game in the season, but Atlanta, in Scott’s words, “played with more energy, they were more physical than us” and “they were just manhandleing us.”

Ely hair

-

Among the things you learn in this city is to never have friends from out of town if you also want to get anything done. Apparently, I’m a slow learner.

-

Oh well – by now it would be silly to start analyzing the Hornets 3–0 start and that incredible opening night game at the Hive. So instead I’m going to be talking about hair.

It’s been 23 days since the last Scuttlecast and I have no idea where the time went. All of a sudden the Hornets season is about to be underway and I’m talking to Niall Doherty of the impeccable Hornets247.com (all Hornets fans should go ahead and bookmark that site right now). Music again provided by Sick Like Sinatra.

-

Oh, and Niall asked me to mention that he’s hosting a season launch party tonight at Handsome Willy’s starting at 7 p.m. There will be beer, Hornets on T.V. and giveaways - I highly recommend everyone goes (what else do you have to do on a Wednesday night anyway?).

Tyson Chandler is tall

Tyson Chandler has a blog.

-

It’s nothing groundbreaking (like he’s not calling people out or talking about hibachi grills like the Wizards’ Gilbert Arenas does in his blog) but it’s still a good form of entertainment with the Saints taking a break — though I’m sure the fireworks will return as soon as the Saints lose to the bye.

chris reading

-

You know the Hornets’ season is coming up when you look at the calendar and see a full week’s worth of Hornets events. Leading up to their season opener at Golden State, the Hornets will be making appearances at the Audobon Zoon, at Fulton Square and in New Orleans East, among other locales.

-

It all starts this weekend with Chris Paul holding a media event on Saturday with Garth Brooks (I know, right? Random) and Copeland’s to announce CP3’s own dish to be served at Copeland’s locations nationwide.  Then Hugo, some Honeybees and a handful of Hornets players will be at Audobon Zoo on Sunday night from 5 to 9 in what I hope will include more than just Hornets players standing around and competing with the lions and tigers and bears (oh my!) for attention. Posey's mouth guard

-

As I’ve mentioned before, the Hornets aren’t the most creative bunch when it comes to customizing their uniforms. Aside from Julian Wright’s ever-present high socks, last season’s team didn’t push fashion boundaries beyond headbands. James Posey has officially changed all of that.

-

Along with having the best stories behind his uniform — I like to call the knee pads, high socks, mouth guard and head band combo the “old-school blacktop warrior” look — he’s also the most innovative when it comes to where to put his unused accessories. Proof positive is in the pic above of Posey’s left leg. Who can guess what that mouth-piece shaped bulge is?
