chef serving

For the unaware, the one they call Chef Who Dat is a Saints’ fan and blogger extraordinaire. Part cook, part pastor, the Chef has delighted residents of the Superdome tailgaits and inside section 641 (a.k.a. Café 641) with his weekly menus and recipes dedicated to that week’s opponent.

Fans play dress up

Of course this will be little consolation to Saints fans, but Monday night’s game was hands down one of the top-five most entertaining sporting events I’ve ever been to. Not  just because that game was straight bananas (and when’s the last time you saw a straight banana?) but because my photographer and I spent our pre-game time hanging out with Saints fans that were tailgating on the top of the Superdome parking lot. Reggie Bush return

Oh boy, the hits just keep on coming from last night. It seems all of the sports world has been thrown into a tizzy after Reggie Bush’s record-setting performance last night against the Vikings. Deadspin had a great video of ESPN’s Robert Flores so excited pulled a Sarah Palin on air (video after the jump): Read the rest of this entry »

McCray and Mom
-
That be a screen grab of Bobby McCray standing next to his mom. ESPN the Magazine had him cook some food for Mike McKenzie, Will Smith and Sedrick Ellis (in full USC garb). On the menu was some chicken-shrimp fettucini alfredo. Sound delicious. I think that Chef Who Dat may be feeling the heat at the moment.

Reggie return

Or so says Chris Kluwe’s Wikipedia page. If you recall, Kluwe basically handed the Saints the win by punting not once, not twice, but three times to Reggie Bush in a row. His coach, it seems, cares not for his Level 70 Rogue status and thinks his punter needs to get in line:

bailout sign

Sports are supposed to be a distraction; a way for people to forget about the real world for a dozen or so hours a week and worry about things that have little-to-no consequence on their daily lives.

-

But at their worst, sports can also be a painful reminder of everything that’s wrong with the world right now. Think about the Saints’ fans in the picture up there. They took the time to make a sign that made a statement — not just to pander to ESPN’s cameras. It was one that reminded us of the troubling reality that is our times and what we assign value to when the times are at their most dire. What are you to tell these fans now after watching last night’s cruel and unusual turn of events?

“That was probably one of the weirdest games I’ve ever been involved in,” Drew Brees said at the start of his press conference. “I’m trying to digest it all right now.”

Saints-Vikings Halftime

And first, he goes up to Martin Grammatica and says, “Hey, instead of this ball going through the up-rights for three points, I’m gonna have this guy block it and this other guy catch it and return it for a touchdown. Read the rest of this entry »

This week I’m talking with Drew Magary, author of “Men With Balls: The Professional Athlete’s Handbook“, regular contributor to Deadspin.com and one of the founding writers of the NFL blog “Kissing Suzy Kolber.” Magary is also a Vikings fan who isn’t exactly jumping for joy that Gus Frerotte is his team’s starting quarterback.
