Gambit contributor Matt Davis attended tonight’s jazz funeral for the Gulf of Mexico staged by the new Krewe of Dead Pelicans, which marched through the Warehouse Arts District in New Orleans style (complete with its own signature cocktail, the Oil Slick — proceeds from which went to the Gulf Coast Fund).

For the whole story, including interviews with several of the 300 costumed marchers, check out Matt’s personal blog, which has photos and this great video — and welcome aboard, Matt!:

Delighted to be here. This was a truly extraordinary protest in an extraordinary city. I’ve never seen anything like it…

interestingly the Beaver Lodge Local 1504 in Durham NC held a NOLA style jazz funeral for the Gulf at the annual beaver queen pageant. Several Hurricane Katrina refugees have moved here. We do not call our jazz funeral a protest we call it a jazz funeral. It was held to mourn and celebrate all the beauty of the Gulf Coast culture.
