Reader Brian McDonald sent in this photo of the aftermath of a fire at South China, the venerable Northshore Cantonese restaurant on Highway 190 just outside of Covington.

And we just got a press release from St. Tammany Fire Protection District 12, whose assistant fire chief Stephen Krentel said he expects the building will be a total loss.

South China was a familiar fixture on the Northshore for decades. Anyone have any particular memories of eating there?

How ironic because the failed Sushi joint next door to it burned down a few years ago which turned out to be insurance fraud if I remember correctly.

Of course the sushi place used to be a Hardees, then a Kenny Roger Roasters, then (my favorite ) the Fun Arcade.

I’ve only ate at Red China only once. My friend’s cousin worked there for a number of years. Oh well, another Covington landmark bites the dust.

South China was an excellent restaurant in its heyday. Unfortunately the quality of the food declined in recent years.

Still it’s sad to see it burn.

I hope no one was injured. This was THE first real Chinese restaurant I can remember in W St. Tam when all that was between Cov and Mandy was 1 traffic light and that one was blinking.

Best thing: Eggrolls. Their secret ingredient: Peanut butter. I’ll never forget meeting the owner, Mr. Kim or my favorite waitress, Gail, who always had a ready quip.

Best fortune cookie from there: Your car will be trouble-free for the next 10,000 miles.

Thanks for the memories.
