Orleans Parish District Attorney Leon Cannizzaro says the mayor’s proposed 2010 budget slashes 15 percent from the $6 million the city allocated to the DA’s office is 2009.  According to Cannizzaro, Nagin removed $575,000 from DA funding — in keeping with Nagin’s 10 percent across-the-board cut of all city departments — but he also eliminated an additional $300,000 to investigate cold case homicides, which the New Orleans City Council had awarded to Cannizzaro’s office in June.

“$875,000 out of a total of $6 million is 14.5 percent, almost 15 percent,” Cannizzaro says.

Starting at 9:30 a.m. this morning in council chambers, the council will begin its 2010 budget hearings. Cannizzaro is expected to appear before the council sometime today.

And once again let’s not forget that he just cut an unexplained 6 million dollar check to Ciber, and contracted yet another IT vendor to provide overlapping services for which MSF was supposedly contracted for.

How about an 80% budget cut in the IT department, which will probably make up for the entire budget shortfall.

There are so many scam-artist business owners in New Orleans now. After Katrina, new start-ups popped up everywhere. It is those biz owners who don’t pay their employees (as in the latino case.)and the contractors who take payments and don’t do the work. my exemployer who owns two kiosks in Riverwalk and Oakwood Center paid us for the first week four weeks later and still owes my roommate and I over $3,000. I can’t pay December rent. Its been really stressful. Without DA Cannizzaro doing his work, these flim-flam artists would get away with even more. I surely dont want to see the DA office reduce services in a time like this when scams in our city have risen with in the influx of new biz peep out to steal our residents pay. I will say no more but dont ever work for an out of town biz owner who set up a kiosk for fast bucks without paying their workers. Hey DA, I need you more than ever now. Let us know what we can do to help u get that budget back.
