That’s sad. I can never understand that whole mindset where you pretend the competition doesn’t exist. It’s a lose-lose attitude.

Niall, I don’t get it either…we’re the first to compliment or reference the Times-Pic when they do something well (and they’ve got a lot of fine writers there).
I just think the mindset you reference is indeed lose-lose. We’re all in the information-dissemination business, and pretending that this outlet or that outlet doesn’t exist is just…ostrichlike.
(I should clarify that I don’t think Doug MacCash did this - I can’t imagine him misidentifying an artwork because its title was that of another paper in town.)
Frolic on November 26th, 2008 at 6:02 pm #
It looks like Doug never lists the name of the pieces. He opts for a brief description instead.
Kevin Allman on November 26th, 2008 at 6:12 pm #
Frolic, that’s what we thought, too - but the paper called Nari Ward’s piece by its name, “Diamond Gym Action Network.” Why wouldn’t you use the name of an artwork? “La Gioconda” is so much more evocative (and precise) than “Picture of a Lady, Smiling.”
I guess we’ll know when they review Sanford Biggers’ installation at the Old U.S. Mint, and call it either “Strange Fruit” or “Big Fake Tree With a Piano Playing Billie Holiday Stuck in the Middle of It.”

Not sure whether Mr. McCash was responsible for this too, but someone at the Times-Pic also seems to have a problem when it comes giving proper credit for the photos: The image of the Deleporte installation at the Mint is mine, not McCash’s. Whether he/they received a copy from our press reps or “borrowed” it from the P.1 website, correct attribution should have been given.

Childish competitiveness aside, doesn’t this violate numerous standards of journalism?
Kevin Allman on November 26th, 2008 at 7:07 pm #
‘S no big thing to us, Civitch…but I think it’s disrespectful to the artist.
Jonno’s case is another issue entirely. I’m sure it was a mistake, but I think he’s owed a correction.
I believe a better word might be “Irreal”?
One wonders if the irony was lost on poor MacCash, who gets a half’outhouse pass since he is young and new to town and hasn’t really had a chance to get around yet, eh?

Wow, that takes the war between the Daily and Alt Weekly ti a new level? Know who loses? The readers. And the artist.

Ummm…ought there to be a letter-writing and commenting campaign addressed to the T-P and nola.com, respectively, concerning this issue?
At the very least, we ought to be able to see which would be first to publish/post anything with the word “gambit” in it. If you’re posted on nola.com, will you then be banned? If you send the best letter to the T-P EVER to ‘em and they publish it, will it be modified?
The mind boggles a little.
Otherwise, Varg is absolutely right.

See the Advocate. See the Advocate actually print the word GAMBIT! See the Advocate supported by GAMBIT WEEKLY’s New Orleans readership as GAMBIT WEEKLY becomes the PREMIER NEW ORLEANS NEWS OUTLET while the tongue-tied, corporately biased and Corps’der’fuckin bribed Times Picayune disappears, rent for floodwall kitty litter. HA!
“After two days of festivities, Grambling State and Southern University will face off Saturday for what New Orleans Gambit Weekly newspaper calls “the Harvard/Yale game of historically black colleges.””

It looks like they do name the art on some days and not on others. Weird.
