This caught our eye:

Mayor Ray Nagin is rolling out the welcome mat for Texans seeking shelter from Hurricane Ike.

In a reversal of fortunes, thousands of Texas residents are headed across the state line as the storm — expected make landfall as a Category 3 hurricane — bears down on Galveston and neighboring communities.

No shelters are open in New Orleans, but Nagin said thousands of hotel rooms are available to accommodate evacuees.

Just ask for the Mayor Ray Nagin special rate,” Nagin said. “I guarantee you’re going to get one of the best rates you’ve ever gotten in the city of New Orleans. We’re ready for you to come, to take care of you like you’ve taken care of us.”

While the wisdom of Houstonians and Galvestonians driving east when the storm itself is one day away and might actually be tracking east seemed meteorologically unsound to us, we picked up the phone to see what the long-suffering night staff of some of the city’s hotels might know about the Mayor Ray Nagin Special Rate.

First stop: the Ritz-Carlton New Orleans, where just before Hurricane Gustav the mayor picked up his Excellence in Recovery Award. The Ritz’s local reservation line was closed for the night, and the call got kicked to a central Ritz-Carlton booking agent, who somehow knew nothing of the Mayor Ray Nagin Special Rate.

Nor was the reservationist at the Holiday Inn French Quarter aware of this magnanimous mayoral discount. “The Ray Nagin rate?” he said.

“For the hurricane? Hurricane Ike?”

“Well, let me see,” he said. After a while on hold, he came back. “Sorry, we don’t have a hurricane special,” he said. “We do have a king room, non-smoking, for $129.”

“Nothing in a Nagin rate?”

“No,” he said, regret in his voice. Then he brightened. “But do you have Triple A or an AARP card?”

Why would he do this. To further heap shame on us?

[...] speak for all New Orleanians when I say that we would love the chance to return the favor (despite the dumbass, glib comments from our dumbass, glib mayor), but please don’t head our way now. Think San Antonio, Austin, El Paso–anyplace west. [...]

We need to rise up and pull an Earl K. Long on this nutcase, have him committed already. At this point, it’s either him or us!

Duct tape. Over his mouth. For the duration of his term.

It’s the only solution.

This fool should have been recalled years ago!

[...] You probably can’t read this right now, you’ve probably got other things on your mind, but on behalf of everyone in the 504, I want to apologize for the insensitive, assholish comments of our Numbskull-in-Chief–you know, when he encouraged you to seek shelter from Hurricane Ike at a hotel in New Orleans and to ask for the “Mayor Ray Nagin special rate”. Interesting…I thought the Nagin special was to not provide your city with evacuation plans & buses then blame the whole mess on federal officials. No thanks, I’ll take the Bill White special…cut through the red tape, get things done and take full responsibility.

Texans will take care of Texans, Nagin AND federal logistics be damned. Nagin would be wise to not set foot in Texas unless he wants to wear a Columbian necktie.

Nagin is an illiterate, idiot who is getting rich skimming money that is supposed to be going to rebuild the levees. He’ll probably run for re-election and he will bus thousands of Katrina victims from Texas back to Louisiana like he did the last time and get himself re-elected. We still have Katrina victims in Texas who chose not to go back to La., when they found out the COULD get a job and make good money instead of waiting for their welfare check the first of each month. For the last 30 to 40 years the democrats have created a corrupt entitlement society in New Orleans and they cannot or will not do ANYTHING for themselves and complain when the government does NOTHING much like Nagin and Blanco DID NOTHING before Katrina. It’s never too late for a RECALL of Ray Nagin. Just start the petition and I’ll guarantee you won’t have any problem getting signatures.

I am so glad to hear that the people of New Orleans realize their mayor is an idiot! Not only did he add insult to injury to anyone who tried to evac. to N.O., he also put the people of his city at risk! What would it have been like in N.O. if the hurricane had tracked east and sent the tidal surge that erased Boliver Penn. to N.O.??? Not only would you have disaster to deal with, you would have evacs. to deal with too!
Please do not reelect this mayor!
By the way, I am a teacher and several of my students are evacs. from Katrina. So many of them are dong better now, as well as their families! One of my students is a third gem St. Bernard projects resident. Now his mother has a job and owns a home!!!! Now he will expect to do the same!!!! I hope the intelligent residents of New Orleans keep speaking out! I love your city, but the mayor has got to go!!!!!!!!!

We still have many of the former residents of N.O. in Houston, or in one of our wonderful jails. Personally, I think the state of Texas should strike a deal with the Louisiana legislature. Give Texas 50% of your gambling revenue, or Texas will legalize gambling and take 95% of the Louisiana gambling revenue. How bout it Louisiana. You wanna play ball with Texas?

It is a shame that the people of LA would take advantage of people in the time of need. Should you forget 3 years ago people across the U.S. open their doors for the people of New Orleans and surrounding arear after hurrican Rita. It is also appalling that LA hotels went up on the rates during this time of devastation. All the love I once had for LA folks is gone.

I evacuated to New Orleans for Ike thinking Nagin’s announcement on TV was legit. I was told by JW Marriott they had no such thing as a Ray Nagin rate. In addition, they told me no rooms were available, a large convention just checked in(11:00 pm). I also called the convention center Marriott, and was told they did not rooms available.I then called Marriott Central reservations and was told both hotels had very many rooms available. Thanks alot, not only would Marriott not honor any discount rates for the Houston evacuation, but the local people would leave someone on the street when rooms were plentiful
