Julian and Mo

All photos by Eilan Levkowitz

The Hornets held a nice early-afternoon get together to unveil their updated logos and uniforms. There were free food and drinks, live music, and Julian Wright and Morris Peterson decked out in the new unis, and brushing each other off on stage. Needless to say, it was a good time all around. Follow me after the jump for extensive pictures a full report:

Hornets color commentator Gil McGregor kicked off the ceremonies and talked about how the new colors and textures capture the spirit of the city better than before. McGregor described the colors as “a more vibrant blue, a passionate purple, and a Mardis Gras gold.” They also presented a video which, conveniantly enough, can be found on the Hornets Web site.

Hornets Executive Officer of the Board Chad Chinn unveiled the three new Hornets. Two featured an upgrade on two logos they had last year — primary Hugo logo and the secondary “Fleur de Bee” logo — and one was a brand new logo that features “NOLA” in golden letters and is integrated with a trumpet.

It was the “NOLA” logo that elicited an audible response from the crowd. It’s also the team’s only completely New Orleans-oriented logo. After unveiling the three logos, Shinn introduced Morris Peterson and Julian Wright who came out on stage and started dusting each other off while Shinn described the unique aspects of the uniforms.

After the presentation, bot Mo and Julian talked to reporters for a bit and discussed their uniforms, socks and Jannero Pargo’s decision to sign with the Russian basketball team Dynamo Moscow. Then it was Mo Pete who put on a show and started to ask Julian all sorts of questions about the jerseys and new addition James posey.

“I like them a lot,” Wright said about the uniforms. “There’s a lot of color and detail, you can tell how they crafted it. It gets a lot of fans looking at the jerseys, even if they’re not a fan of ours they’ll stop and stare.”

As you can see, both new uniforms feature the return of pin stripes, with both featuring “New Orleans” written across the chest. Both uniforms also feature the Fleur de Bee on the shoulder, on the side of the shorts and the NOLA Horn on back of the shorts, just below the waistband.

Julian was also rocking black high socks. I asked why he wasn’t wearing matching blue socks and he said because he wanted to keep it simple.

“We got a lot of colors up top,” he said. “We can’t have so much down there. You just want to keep to a minimum.”

After Mo and Julian, general Jeff Bower took some time to speak.

“I think all kinds of emotions and all kinds of enthusiasm can be felt by everybody in the organization,” Horents general manager Jeff Bower said after the presentation. “We want to accomplish more as an organization and you see how we feel about the branding with out team and how we feel that deep connection to our city.”

And then he started getting bombarded with questions about the upcoming season, which is more than two months away.

Terrance Osborne painting The Hornets also unveiled this painting by local artist Terrance Osborne which feature a three-story, Hornets-themed house and gave out prints to everyone who attended. Osborne also signed copies of the prints afterward.

”The house represents the new, fresh, vibrant colors of the team,” he said. “It’s more of a celebration. It’s a festive thing that ties New Orleans with the Hornets.”

(SIDE NOTE: The best moment of the afternoon, by far, was when an older-looking man with gray stubble and white hair sprouting out of his head came up to Osborne, shook his hand and said, “Congratulations on last year and good luck with this season. This year we’re gonna go all the way.” Apparently all it takes to pass for an NBA player is to be a black man sitting behind a table and signing autographs.)

Overall you have to say the event was a success for the Hornets organization. Sure this city had already embraced the team and changes are purely symbolic. But when you’re a professional sports franchise, it never hurts to reaffirm your connection to a city. Especially when that city is New Orleans and there were questions about the franchise’s long-term plans. At the very least, it got the team some great publicity. Full video recap, with even more pictures, coming tomorrow.

Um…. placing the words “vibrant” “passionate” and “Mardi Gras” in front of the names of the exact same colors you’ve been using does not magically make them different.

If they really wanted to change the color scheme to something more New Orleans all they’d have to do is ditch the teal and replace it with green. It’s really not even that big a reach. But it’s always the same with paranoid corporate marketing. Always afraid to be original. Always too eager to BS people about what they’re actually looking at.

The NBA is utterly stupid. At least the pinstripes make them look more like the uniforms they wore in Charlotte. That way everyone can be reminded of the fact that this franchise skipped out on its original fan base.

If you look at the colors, they are different. No, adding adjectives to them doesn’t signify anything in itself, but I think they want to keep making things uniquely New Orleans, as they have consistently done, rather than use the images of the past. Pinstripes might be reminiscent of Charlotte, but it’s also a classic look. To denigrate how this franchise has integrated into the city, and how the city and its citizens have embraced them in return is unfortunately. Thankfully, plenty of New Orleanians feel different than Jeffrey. Thanks for the great update, Alejandro.

I think they could have done much better. It’s funny to me how popular it has become to associate things actually are “uniquely New Orleans” (such as a purple green and gold color scheme) with the supposedly undesirable “images of the past. I would argue, in fact, that the Hornets’ use of the “trumpet” logo and their cynical throwing around of words like “Mardi Gras” “Creole” and “Jazz” (They actually said somewhere that the pinstripes have a “jazzed up feel” or some such nonsense) more closely represent a shallow cartoonish use of a cliched New Orleans than any sort of attempt to “integrate into the city” in any sort of meaningful fashion.

I would also like to express my appreciation for the good work Alejandro does here. I’m just not buying the Hornets’ BS

I don’t necessarily buy “Creole blue” either, because it’s not really a color. They could have just said, “Teal looked weird. We went turquoise,” and I would have been fine with that. I like Mardi Gras colors, but I’m not convinced they wouldn’t look like crap on a jersey. It’s pretty much just the same thing with a slight color tweak, stripes, and the Fleur de Bee. I like the home one, and maybe the away one will grow on me. Is it the most amazingly “New Orleans” best-jersey-in-the-world thing they could have made? No. But it’s an upgrade. The old ones were a plain straight jersey with 4 colors and no real design elements (ie: just a stripe and a varsity letter, ok we’re done!)

Good looking out hornets fans

Hornet Henry on August 20th, 2008 at 11:59 pm #

Before I begin, whatsup Soul Rebels? Thank you for Fanning Up in a big way last season! Can’t wait to see you guys play again soon!

Jeffrey clearly needs a hug, which conveniently enough, Hornet Henry would be glad to personally provide - while sporting my brand-new authentic Ryan Bowen jersey - any time Jeff wants to stop by the Hornet Henry residence.

You know what? I’ll even have Mrs. Hornet Henry deliver us a stupendous home-cooked meal consisting of whatever main course and sides you desire, Jeff.

Personally, I believe these new jerseys and logos are arguably the greatest uniforms in the history of sports, not just on the professional level, but also including college, high school, junior high, Little League and the Pee Wee ranks. In fact, they may be the greatest uniforms in the history of ALL uniforms, which is saying something since if I’m not mistaken, there at least 2 or 3 non-sports professions out there that require uniforms.

I’m speculating that the Hornets knew that to satisfy Jeffrey, reaching this level of historical uniform achievement would be the only possible route to take.

Unfortunately, they still appear to have fallen shy of Jeffrey’s standards, which is a shame.

So Jeff, I want to try to personally make it up to you. Come over to the Hornet Henry casa whenever it’s convenient for you - you don’t even need to call ahead, just show up and I’ll get Mrs. Hornet Henry on top of it pronto - and we’ll map out the 2009 NBA championship parade route through downtown NOLA over dinner. Maybe I can talk you through this and we can set you up with some uniform and logo anger-management counseling (little-known fact, but ULAM Anonymous is doing some amazing work these days!).

Maybe we can discuss what changes you want made to the uniform. Maybe you’ll be so delighted by Mrs. Hornet Henry’s cooking and her delicious meal that you’ll immediately pick up the rotary phone in my kitchen and purchase Hornets 2008-09 season tickets by going old school and slowly dialing (504) 525-HOOP.

Or maybe, if you’re feeling a little more 21st-century vibe and there is a computer within arm’s length of the kitchen table, you will find yourself getting the irresistible urge to log on to Hornets.com to get those season tix. I’ll even type in the address for you!

…. This is going to be a great time. Come on over Jeff! We’ll be waiting for you, good sir!
