Was it a hoax? A joke? This morning, invitations for a party honoring Mayor C. Ray Nagin were making the rounds of fax machines, emails, and the Internet with a speed normally associated with the more revealing Britney Spears photo. (To see the invite’s front, go to Krewe of Truth; Eli at We Could Be Famous has the obverse.)

We’ll just quote here:

The Excellence in Recovery Host Committee

cordially invites you to

A Tribute to the Recovery of New Orleans

Special guest

Lt. General Russell Honore (Ret.)

presents

The Award of Distinction

For Recovery, Courage, and Leadership

to

Mayor C. Ray Nagin

and

The Katrina Community Survivors Award

to

New Orleans Katrina Survivors

The event was scheduled to be held Aug. 22 at the “Ritz-Carlton Juneau Penthouse,” the home of developer Stewart Juneau, who was listed as event co-chair along with Bernardo, the well-known French Quarter photographer, and city contractor Donald G. Lambert, Jr.

The host committee? Dan Packer, former president of Entergy New Orleans…and New Orleans City Councilwoman Jackie Clarkson.

That last name surprised us just a wee bit.

We called the councilwoman. She called back. She sounded tired.

“I was expecting to be on a host committee to honor Katrina survivors,” Clarkson said. “I love Mr. Bernardo, and when he asked me to be on a committee to honor Katrina survivors, there was no mention of the mayor, and no mention of me being co-chair.

“I don’t think we ought to be honoring the mayor,” she added. “I think if we’re honoring anybody, it ought to start with the survivors [of the storm], and then the first responders, then the neighborhood and faith-based leaders. Not the government. Not the government.”

Had she spoken to the mayor about the event?

“Not yet. I have no need to.”

Has she spoken to Bernardo?

“Yes. Well, my chief of staff has,” Clarkson said. “He’s coming over to see us now.

“Please stress this,” she added. “I am not disassociating myself from honoring survivors, not from Katrina ceremonies, not from celebrating the third anniversary of the storm, and not from Bernardo. I am definitely disassociating myself from honoring the mayor.”

Will she be attending the event?

“I don’t know. At this point I’m annoyed, so I don’t know what I’m doing.”

Gambit also spoke to several of the participating restaurants listed on the invitation, with mixed results. Representatives from K-Paul’s and the Bombay Club confirmed that they would be participating at the party, but one establishment (which asked not to be named) said that it had not been contacted by anyone from the “Excellence in Recovery Host Committee” to cater the event.

Melvin Rodrigue, general manager of Galatoire’s, which was listed on the invitation, said that he wasn’t sure whether the venerable restaurant would be feeding its famed Creole specialties to the Excellence in Recovery Host Committee. “I’m not certain. We do several events a month.” When the invitation was read to him, Rodrigue said, “Bernardo and Don Lambert are customers of the restaurant…I do remember them mentioning this to me in passing in the dining room, but I don’t think anything was confirmed.”

Is Galatoire’s participating?

“I’m saying that any time I get a request such as this, I request some information in return, and I have not received any information.”

But…is Galatoire’s participating?

“I’m not certain.”

Right now it seems that all trails lead back to Bernardo, but no one’s answering at his French Quarter gallery and there’s no machine. We’ll keep trying.

And Loki over at the Humid City blog recounts his conversation with the councilwoman here

Bernardo needs to cancel this one. Either that, or the community needs to get some idea of where the heck this $500/plate money is going.

Kevin Allman on August 14th, 2008 at 5:46 pm #

Do you know for sure that it’s $500/plate? All the materials I’ve seen have been absent the usual r.s.v.p. card that would have the monetary amount on it.

liprap on August 14th, 2008 at 5:49 pm #

E had that information on his latest post.

liprap on August 14th, 2008 at 5:50 pm #

Then again, he has said that that is hearsay…

Kevin Allman on August 14th, 2008 at 5:52 pm #

I saw that, but I haven’t been able to confirm anything about tickets or ticket prices on my own, so I’ve left that out here. Not doubting Eli’s post, but I can’t let that info be repeated here without having made my own proof.

Gotcha that. Keep on pluggin’!

How about Nagin apologizes for being such a doofus, and the money goes to Squandered Heritage to continue their efforts.

I think we need to get the sponsor list transcribed and posted everywhere and see how fast they run. This event needs to go away like the 2006 anniversary “celebration”

That man is freakin’ seriously delusional. Or else he is not catering to folks of sound mind and body. I am starting to wonder if New Orleans isn’t truly a microcosm of America with Katrina being our Sept. 11 and Ray being our Bush. Lord.

I agree with Mark. Shame on Bernardo if he pulled a bait and switch. His website boasts of his personal friendship to the mayor; I think the businessmen and women of this town need to be more suspicious of such requests henceforth, if just as a matter of courtesy to the non-tourist customers they may or may not have subsequent to such postings.

Maybe the mayor could co-share this with Blakely. They make a remarkable team.

Kevin Allman on August 14th, 2008 at 9:48 pm #

Mark, can you (or someone) transcribe that list? I’m working on another aspect of the story at the moment or I’d do it myself.

Will link, give full credit, etc. If someone does it, leave a comment here and I’ll pick it up.

I’m still hoping to confirm if it is $500 a plate. It’s something I’ve heard that we should be asking about.

The “sponsors” may be running for cover but the TV news is running with it. I believe WDSU, WWL, and FOX all had this story at 5 & 10 pm yesterday, with video. That means C.Ray’s PR team must be pushing this. I wonder how the TV stations like being made fools of, and whether they will cover the *real* story, which is now about how many “committee members” are backing away and how citizens plan to use the ceremony as an opportunity to show their outrage at the mayor’s LACK of leadership? His re-election is most likely the greatest impediment to recovery since Blanco.

Kevin, I’m so glad you are on this. As an unpaid reporter on this subject my time is minimal. Bills have to be paid. Knowing there is actually someone else on the case hammering for details make me feel much better about this.

As to Bernardo, I know him from my days at House of Blues when he used to come in, often with Morial whose photographer he was at the time. All I will say is that I do not like them man one bit.

I suggest not just dirt digging on this, bu wholesale excavation. In the new New Orleans we will eventually hunt down the chicanery and hold people accountable! Before the storm we would not have seen this or NOAH get light of day until at least one subsequent administration had gone y. Now we’re popping these issues out there much closer to real time.

We have a 300 year history of laissez faire attitude about corruption. Lets make that one of the things that got washed away…..
