Ever read The Rude Pundit? “Rude” isn’t quite the word — he makes George Carlin sound like a Carmelite nun — but, dang, is he ever funny, and despite the fact that he’s a Nor’easterner, his level of outrage at the “rebuilding” of New Orleans is pitched at permanent 11.

The Rude One goes on vacation Monday, and he’s decided to turn over his popular blog for a week to a clutch of smart Netwriters from our fair parish….

I wasn’t kidding, folks. At the very bottom of my last post of Friday, July 25, about Jimmy Fahrenholtz’s appeal of the qualification challenge against him, I left a “Note to My Readers” in which I said, quote, “I’m leaving in the morning for my annual two weeks of sanity in Red Lodge, Montana. … If past years are any indication, the fertilizer will hit the oscillator at least once while I’m gone. It never fails.”
Well, no sooner than my flight touched down in Billings did state Sen. Derrick Shepherd flame out in a most spectacular fashion. See WWL-TV’s web site for some great reporting on this. Cutting to the chase, he has been arrested by Jefferson Parish deputies for simple battery, unauthorized entry of a dwelling, and theft of over $500 after allegeldy fighting with his ex-girlfriend and allegedly stealing her cell phone. But wait, there’s more …
Read the rest of this entry »

After yesterday’s incident proved to just be a scare, some are implying that the Saints need a viable backup for Deuce. The passing game still looks good, with Marques Colston sitting pretty as the No. 1 receiver and Jeremey Shockey giving the Saints a 1-2 punch. Meanwhile, the not-so-under-the-radar is that Jonathan Vilma is really good.

Is it just me or is there something odd about receiving an email about a fashionable gun for women although I’ve never bought a gun? The presentation of the email is that left-handed women can now get an accurate, fashionable pink .38 Special + P caliber handgun with the cute name “Southpaw Pink Lady.”

It sounds more like a fruity drink than a deadly weapon.

My problem is not the thought of a woman buying a gun for self-defense, but the marketing strategy. If I got the email without a history of buying guns, then it must have been an indiscriminate mailing.

The gun is produced by Charter Arms, which says it produced a mirror image of its “wildly popular” right-hand Pink Lady firearm because of a demand from customers. The marketing verbiage is pretty effective with phrases like “compact ultra-lightweight Undercover series” and “weights a feathery 12-ounces thanks to its tough 7075 aircraft aluminum frame.” It’s almost like reading a fashion magazine description of the must-have handbag for teenagers. It even has a quasi apology for costing $36 more than its right-hand version (also pink). Who are the intended customers here?
